Styrofoam balls: an essential choice for your pouf

The so-called balls or pearls are actually expanded polystyrene (EPS) granules , often used to fill poufs, giant cushions, footrests, and beanbag chairs. They can improve comfort and durability, thanks to the performance derived from the plastic material they are made of.

Why choose polystyrene balls?

Because they have very useful qualities for those looking for the perfect padding.

  • Lightweight: The balls are extremely lightweight, making the pouf easy to move.

  • Comfort : They adapt to the shape of the body, offering exceptional ergonomic support.

  • Flexibility : they immediately return to their original shape after sitting on them, maintaining the shape of the pouf.

  • Durability : They are resistant to wear and tear and will last for many years.

  • Resistance : They absorb shock and resist compression.

  • Thermal insulation : they counteract humidity and prevent the resulting damage.

  • Space : these are small spheres with a diameter of a few mm, which can be used in various paddings.

  • Breathability : they allow air to circulate, preventing the body from overheating.

  • Hygiene : the material is easy to clean and keep intact, it does not release dust.

  • Safety : They are non-toxic and hypoallergenic granules for adults, children and pets.

These benefits are guaranteed if you use polystyrene beads as replacements for poufs and beanbag chairs. The advantages of polystyrene beads are, in fact, exploited primarily for this type of furniture, but they are also used as a filling in stuffed toys and for product packaging.

Because the plastic they are made from, polystyrene, is made up of hydrocarbon molecules: small, lightweight, and ideal for a wide variety of applications.

Types of Styrofoam Balls

There are various types of polystyrene balls available on the market.

  • Standard. These are regular-sized balls, ideal for most beanbags. They are made of spheres with a diameter of approximately 4 mm.

  • Microspheres. These are smaller, finer beads that offer superior comfort. These beads generally have a diameter of approximately 1.2–2.5 mm.

For purchase, EPS spheres and microspheres are sold in bags of 40, 100, 200 liters, etc. up to 600 liters in capacity.

How to fill your pouf

If you want to create a new filling with Styrofoam balls, proceed with caution.

  1. Preparation: Make sure the work area where you place the bean bag is clean to prevent the EPS beads from getting dirty.

  2. Filling. Pour the balls into the bean bag, directly into the opening, using a funnel or paper cone to reduce clutter and center the entrance.

  3. Adjustment. Adjust the filling level by calibrating the EPS beads according to your comfort preference (more or less inflated beanbag).

Maintenance and care of the pouf

Here are some tips to keep your pouf in tip-top condition.

  • Regular cleaning: Vacuum the bean bag regularly to remove dust and debris.

  • Additional filling: Add Styrofoam beads when the bean bag begins to deflate to maintain its shape and comfort.
